Lufthansa Systems, the information technology arm of the Lufthansa Group, will unveil an integrated
system for air cargo carriers at this week's Air Cargo Forum in Washington.
Lufthansa developed the system, called UltraFreight, with Cargo Data Management, a software
development and marketing company concentrating on the air cargo industry.
"This is the first time Lufthansa has ever developed a cargo revenue and accounting and tracing and
tracking system for sale outside the Lufthansa Group," said Garner McNett Jr., president of Cargo
Data, which is based at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.
The system is still under development, but should be ready for sale by spring. Participants at the
forum, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in
Washington, will be able to see "a work in progress," McNett said.
Lufthansa and Cargo Data say their browser-based, Internet-enabled system will incorporate all the
functionality required to control and manage an airline's air cargo business.
The system is designed for passenger and all-cargo airlines. It's initially aimed at small and medium-
sized carriers but after a couple more years of development will be available to even the largest
carriers, McNett said.
Lufthansa Cargo will probably be a customer for the second- or third-generation version of the
system, he said.
The system has nine modules, but carriers can purchase them separately. The modules cover such
functions as cargo accounting, booking, tracking, scheduling, terminal operations, import-export
handling, warehousing, rate calculation and pricing.
The modular design allows carriers to implement system components as required. UltraFreight's
browser-based architecture will allow carriers to use Lufthansa Systems' application service provider
functionality to outsource their cargo system IT requirements, the developers added.
